Those wings... I want them too.
АнглийскийThe girl on this video, Alla, is а 20-years old master of sports in ice dancing, having come to Moscow from Perm. She is my figure skating coach, and I really like her:
As for me, figure skating is an extraordinary field. On the one hand, it's so beautiful, charming and elegant; on the other - it is very tough, requiring strong character, endurance, power of will, sense of purpose and a lot of endeavors and hard work hidden behind wonderful image. As Alla has told me once: «Well, I've fallen down during the contest, and it was painful. But what did I have to do? Quickly stand up and smile, like nothing had happened at all».
I'm getting more and more convinced that this combination of personal traits is something that I need in my life.
Taking a personal coach is expensive and workouts require time and efforts that I lack the most, but it seems to be the only way for me to achieve results. And I can't afford doing something without getting results. There are a few figure skating schools in Moscow with adult groups, but those near me do not offer effective training in both aspects of gliding skills and physical load. Those that are on the other end of the city do not have schedule suitable for me.
I was thinking to start figure skating for a long time, till asked my darling to present me a certificate for five training sessions as the 8th of March gift. When I had used all the lessons, I understood that I terribly want to continue.
Anyway, being too rational person I would not do something without reasons that prove the usefulness of the activity ))) And I think there are such reasons. So many words were spoken about positive affect of (sensible) physical activity on the health, productivity and stress-resistance that they cannot be an absolute lie. According to my observations, those who are regularly going for sport indeed stay taut and attractive even in elder ages. And according to some researches, more attractive persons are more likely to earn success and career growth. Sport and healthy lifestyle are trendy in corporate culture nowadays and so many people around me are going to gym, doing powerlifting or bodybuilding, running, swimming, bicycling, playing hockey, football, badminton... For some extent, it is just a demand from my environment to pick any type of physical activity. In addition, Vova's family is also sporty, though they would not enforce me to do the same way, of course.
What is important as well, figure skating can be a great source of positive emotions and pleasure, gives the possibility to behold beauty and become a part of it, and to relax mentally. Lack of endorphins may harm one's normal functioning just like lack of motion do. I started to realize recently, that though I'm trying to be helpful and kindly, my bad mood and dissatisfaction can be very poisonous to others.
There were also some conclusions that I've made while skating, and they, unfortunately, are not so positive. One of the most irritating things for me (when I was working full-time) was that the indoor ice rinks were crowded by children with personal trainers during public skating on the weekends. Okay, I was one of this crowd. But the level of skating skills of those kids made me think that they did not practice only on Saturday and Sunday, as I did. It really looked like they were attending municipal sports schools on weekdays and then just taking extra lessons in order to be superior to their group mates. Yes, I'm disappointed when people spoil others' only opportunity to relax and distract from problems just to feel themselves the first and the best. Well, actually, I'm disappointed when people think only about being the first and the best, not paying attention to the others and interference that they can create to them. They were so insolent, those kids
Another unpleasant thing was all those talks about personal tutors for school. I do not understand, who will grow up from a child that have a personal coach for sport, a personal tutor for school and a personal teacher for English? An adult accustomed to being superior to his/her entourage after average efforts? A person being assured that there will always be a professional who let him/her stay at the highest position? And that this professional will want only to be paid money, and will not have a question, why does not he/she deserve the same position for his/her mastery? Really, It seems to me that I do see people grown up from such kids around me.
Alla told me, that only a few pupils from her group in Perm continued figure skating when grown up, most of them found more interesting things to do. That's no surprise, considering that she was being trained along with children of local officials and businessmen. The same situation was here, in Moscow where she moved to continue sport career. She said, she have been surrounded by very wealthy group mates, that have easily quit when they just got bored.
This video is from one of my previous company's corporate party, when its employees were making a performance with an assistance of professional figure skaters:
I saw the interview with this woman in the local resources article describing the event after party. She told that she was doing figure skating in childhood, but then she and her parents decided that it doesn't suite her...
And now she is "manager of something" in software company
The company that is moved ahead by nerds, who were racking their brains on physics, maths and informatics while she was skating
I felt such attitude from KL management: a technical professional must solve all the problems for being just paid money, and is not allowed to question the quality of superior staff's work. One manager of mine was greatly offended when he phoned a guy from my team, who was on his vacation then, and that guy refused to postpone everything and rush to help the chief. Okay, I know that true professional should be responsible for his/her work, and it's usual practice to solve working problems in after-hours — but it is a gesture of goodwill, not the duty from employment contract, and management should not take it for granted. Especially when they have organized the process so what only one person can help them.
The picture became even worse when the same manager told me that he goes for boxing five times a week — while I was thinking whether should I drop out my sport lessons for completing unfinished work or self-educating on weekends. And do not kids of such managers behave the same insolent way, as those who hinder me on the ice rinks?
I guess, the main problem with those who are accustomed to high position with average endeavors, is that they will not concede this position to someone who has outrun them due to greater efforts and is more suitable for this place. So they will protect their position even with dishonest ways, that is easy in our country with poor legislation and right of strong. And when there is no possibility to grow, people either do not try to grow, or start growing in other places of the globe. Other places are evolving, this country is lagging, former kids on ruling positions travel a lot, see the modern world, want here to be the same, but when they are not able neither to achieve high result by themselves nor to respect those who work for them, it ends up like this:
Okay, I'm taking too high. I'm not a political scientist and should not build such generalizing models and make such categorical conclusions
Maybe not everything is so sad
Anyway, I'm going to continue figure skating, especially when I sit at home and may go to less filled ice rinks. That's me jumping salchow:
